Why Homework Should Not Be Banned

Homework is never a class favorite. It seems like a pain and cuts out time for fun things like play, TV, and video games. Due to its terrible reputation, educators have considered doing away with it altogether. However, studies show that homework is beneficial, helping students become more productive now and in the future. While we know homework can be a drag, we’re here to share three key reasons why homework should stay. Plus, when students don’t enjoy it, we’ll share ways that both teachers and parents can make it more interesting.

  1. Improves Skills

It’s not enough to learn in class. Not to say that teachers aren’t doing a fantastic job. Class time is for learning something new and homework is to practice. For instance, when students learn in class, they can easily forget. That’s why assigning homework can help them check for comprehension and actually help them improve. While doing homework, if students realize they are struggling with something, they can request extra help or get a tutor. So, when it comes to growing skills, homework is a big help.

  1. Promotes Responsibility

Not only does homework help now but, it shows clear benefits for the future. For example, with regularly assigned homework, students will grow up to handle responsibilities and learn how to manage their time more effectively. Assigning homework will help students develop good habits that they can take with them as they move into university and eventually into the career of their dreams.

  1. Improves Grades and Test Scores

Perhaps the most obvious benefit is the positive effect that homework has on grades and test scores. With additional practice outside of the classroom, students will see how well they know and understand a topic. Later, they can take what they learned and apply it to future projects or tests that can affect their grade. In the end, it’s their GPA that will help them get into top colleges.

How to Enjoy Homework

If students are having trouble doing homework, there are a few things that both educators and parents can do. First of all, educators can set strict rules for due dates and create consequences for those that don’t turn it in. Both parents and teachers can brainstorm ways to reward students for turning in homework on time, reinforcing its importance. It’s a well-known fact that, when motivated, students are more likely to do well and keep up with their work, keeping up with due dates.

Homework is Here to Stay

Because of the benefits, homework is definitely here to stay. While teachers might lighten up the load, they will still require that students practice new topics. Homework not only helps them now but also in the future, as they develop solid habits as they break into the working world. Homework might be a pain at times but, it is a sure way to improve skills, kick up grades, and check for comprehension, all at the same time.
